Countrys first grid connected solar project begins generation

KOLKATA: The country's first grid connected solar power project in Asansol, West Bengal, has begun operation, marking a major breakthrough in the green energy revolution in the country.
"The project has become operational and power generated is being pumped into the grid. This is first grid-connected venture so far," said DPSC MD S Radhakrishnan.
The plant, implemented in collaboration with DPSC and Green Energy Development Corporation, was expected to generate 3 million units of electricity a year.
It annual revenue was pegged at Rs 4.8 crore. WBGEDC could earn a further 97 paise/unit through the sale of carbon credits that the project would accrue.
Radhakrishnan said, "We are buying solar power at Rs 5 a unit from the project for distribution as our commitment towards the environment".
It would prevent 7 lakh tonne of carbon dioxide emission a day that a 2-MW thermal project emitted daily.
DPSC has offered land to the project. The total capex is Rs 34-35 crore. DPSC would buy the power at Rs 5/unit and the Renewable Energy Ministry would pay Rs 10 per unit as incentive.
He said there was scope to add capacity, but it would be done depending on project evaluation and fiscal benefit.
The power the solar plant's generation would be fed into DPSC's grid for distribution to customers in the Asansol-Raniganj belt.
